Visual balance is a powerful way to produce new indoor environments.

Balance in interior design is crucial for creating a harmonious and inviting space. It ensures that a room feels relaxing, grounding, and comfortable. Let’s delve into the foundations of achieving balance:

Symmetry and Asymmetry

  1. Symmetry: This refers to a perfect mirror image. Rooms like bedrooms and dining areas often lend themselves to symmetry. Think of centered furniture arrangements and matching pairs.
  2. Asymmetry: While not perfectly mirrored, asymmetry still feels visually balanced. It involves elements like texture, color, or pattern. Living rooms, with their mix of seating and decor, often embrace asymmetry.

In the example below, we can find a balance created by the side lamp's asymmetry, combined with the decoration on the table, which breaks the perfect symmetry generated by the sofa.

Finding Your Balance:

  1. Start with Structural Elements: Style your room around architectural features like a fireplace or large window.
  2. Avoid Over-Symmetry: If everything feels perfectly mirrored, introduce variety. Add a different color or pattern to break the symmetry.
  3. Address Chaotic Spaces: When a room feels unsettled, asymmetry can restore balance. Use color and pattern strategically.

In the example below, we find a balance created by elements on both sides of the sofa. The lamp over the coffee table and the plant on the right match and fill the space with pairs. You can also apply this at home. If your space is starting to feel a little too chaotic, maybe you’re not noticing any pairs, start to identify where you see one-offs and find a friend within the room to pair with.

Try This at Home

  1. Gather Inspiration: Look at images of similar spaces. Notice whether they lean more towards symmetry or asymmetry (hint: most rooms combine both!).
  2. Architectural Elements: Observe doors, windows, and built-ins. Are they centered or off-center?
  3. Evaluate Your Pieces: Consider how your furniture and decor fit into the space. Do they align with symmetry or asymmetry?

Remember, balance is subjective and can vary from project to project. Let the architectural elements guide your choices, and create a space that resonates with you!
